Day 4. Do what an artist would do.

Dear artist, for project- trying to be artist - can you text me a daily action/ task/ routine, that a cliche of an artist does. I will do it tomorrow. Thanks Sadie

9.32 am

1st Action
wake up, have two sips of a glass of warm water.
then stand in a place facing outside, preferably towards the sun (even if cloudy)
-shake ur body gently as if listening to slow tecno- 2 min
-rotate both arms in full circle- going up breath in, going down breath out- 10 times
-move your arms slowly as if wings of a bird- going up breath in (nose) going down breath out (mouth).
-seat down in silence breathing slowly
In all of them when u breath in first fell up lower lungs, as if filling up ur tummy and then upper chest.

10.02 am

2nd Action

write morning pages, three full A4 size papers write down anything thats on your mind no censure , first thing in the morning.
[Leonora Anstrup]

bell rings- post man with 3 packages.

resume writing

bell rings again [landlady to check toilet overflow]
have break to make tea and eggs

resume writing 1.5 pages. finish. last word I write is 'easy'. Accident.

Take shower

3rd Action

Wake up. Look out the window. Meditate and write the first bits of thought of the morning, the note book has to be special in someway... Reflect on this writing in years to come.'
[Priya Saujani]

Have already woken up and looked out of window. Need to find a special book.

Couldn't find a book. Room to messy. Tidied room.

4th Action. 'some sort of procrastination... for example...putting socks into pairs' [Louise Wilson]

Found I could force socks into 12 pairs, and that left 8 single socks.
This delayed going to the studio even longer.

5th Action. 'drink coffee all day'
[BEAN]

Pick up on action 3.

I forgot my notebook. The wifi doesn’t work so been forced to write on a napkin.

At least its an expressive handwritten note like that book said.
I brought some snickers.
Time is disappearing. Really aware of its speed.
In a posh café.
Probably one they think they want to look like artists frequent. But don’t actually like artists going there.

Action 6. 'Write spontaneous poetry when stuck in certain situations; cafes on your own, or train journeys. Write in stream of consciousness. Don't over edit.'
[me]

(created myself after experiences yesterday in Quality Cafe on Morning Lane)
Write a poem about this trendy café. See if its as inspiring as greasy spoon yesterday.

Cafe poem two.

Crisp toasted stack.
White napkin/ knife laid side by side expectant.
Almost said ‘no, I don’t need that’.
Frought expression from fellow laptop-head.
Wet single people walk in. Drips steam off.
Take a seat, drop bag.
Feel the pressure.
What do they get out?
It is… it is what I thought
A silver sleek and shiny Macbook Pro.
Next girl- red leather + arty tote.
Another… can’t be true
More dull this time.
Eased off the new lustre
Older, less ideas + ambition
She looks round searching.
? The question…
No The answer, the
loss of hope ‘It should
be working.
They peer, refresh, click
Resort to smart phones.
I wish I was in
Quality caf.
Although here I can
Swallow the coffee.
A perfect place would be…
A greasy…
With all the mod cons.
One day I’ll open
It.
I’ve thought about it
Before.
1960’s fittings, A
frying plate.
Set 1… £3.20
Coffee included.
Teaspoon dips in the
Nescafe, but no.
Really expresso like
Italy.
And maybe wifi----
Or a non-wifi
Save haven.
Shit I wasn’t meant to
Go online today. Oops.

Action 7.

2.28 pm

Received very long text message;

Dear Sadie, tis Sara Zaltash here,
I am somewhere with hardly any internet and I wanted to give you an artist task… Please write an application for a residency. The residency can be any sort that you like, in any location.
An ideal, a fiction, a nightmare, it’s up to you! Select location, theme, funding profile and duration of the residency and write the following as if you are applying to the residency: artist bio (500 words max), intention while at the residency (500 words max), what you hope to contribute to the everyday life of the residency (500 words max). Please provide up to 5 pieces of documentation about your practice. The deadline is the end of your week as an artist. Let me know if you got ahead with it!
Sara

Responded;

My fictional residency,  commissioned by Zara Saltash.

Location:
The residency will be in Carmical castle in Scotland. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty, and not unlike St Michaels mount in its set-up. The castle lies on a separated mound. You can only get access to cross, when the tide is out, exposing the raised path.

Theme:
The theme is to look at the theories and ideas of ‘the absurd’, ‘being and becoming’ through exploring fictional landscape and authenticity.

Funding profile:
It is being funded by Scottish National  Landscape Trust, a small venue for performance art called ‘Byserk’ in Glasgow, and the Mytho-geographical Trust.

Duration:
It is an intense month long residency. Where you live on site, and share living, eating spaces with the other residency artists. There are 5 international artists in total [including 2 scottish born]

Artist bio- 500 words
[will fill in]
Intention while at the residency (500 words max)
 [will fill in]
What you hope to contribute to the everyday life of the residency (500 words max)
[will fill in]
